At our last meeting we chose, Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. This is the first book of his highly acclaimed space trilogy. You shouldn't have any problems finding this read at your local library or used bookstore.

Our meeting will be on December 7th, the first Saturday of the month (as always :).

November book pick!

http://images.barnesandnoble.com/images/7030000/7035381.jpg

The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton
Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich

These are the choices for this month. I have a library book bag of copies of Nickel and Dimed, and it looks good. I would have had to return the other book (Snow) before we could have read it. However I want to give a strong personal recommendation for The Wednesday Sisters. I read it this week and it was amazing, I cried, laughed and, it was worth every word written. But, we would all have to find out own copies of this, they don't have book bags of it at the lib.

Think about which you want to read, you can either comment here, or let me know at the meeting.

This will be the last book for this year. We are not going to read a book in December. We will meet to hang out, but not to discuss anything :)

Have a great week!! (Make sure you respond to the evite ASAP, and if you didn't get one and want one, let me know!)

Pretty Paper, getting a new start.

Hello all.

I am giving Pretty Paper book club a new start. This is now going to be a local thing. We can choose to go to other places for fun, but I want to facilitate more of a community of book readers in this area. You are all still welcome, however instead of discussing the books online we will just discuss them in person at our meetings. Most meetings (if not all) will be in Corvallis, and you are welcome to bring any friends you want. I would still like to keep it to just women however.

This blog will now be more of an information place than a book conference/ club blog.

If you want to come and be a part, let me know.

next PP meeting!

We had a pretty close race for the restaurant last month, so this month we'll just head to the second choice: Bentley's Bar and Grill in Salem Oregon, at 6:00pm. ( I was still waiting to hear back from the Portland People on if they would actually rather have it in Corvallis...so let me know). Susan has offered us to do it at her house, we could do potluck style, and she has an extremely fun HOT TUB! So think about that for next time!!!( maybe for June?Let me know if you are in for that, I have to check with her too)

It looks really nice, and yummy. Our meeting will be the first Sat. of May (as always) which is the 3rd. So it is not this Saturday, but the following.

Announcing: B&b Ex Libris and Orbis Terrarum

To all you avid book reader peoples!!

1.) Brad and I started a book blog! It will be fun to keep a blog together, and this is the perfect thing for us to do!

B&b ex libris :one bookboy (B) & one bookgirl (b) + the books that together they bring (ex libris).

In this blog we will review books, sometimes the same ones, other times others. Brad will do it on a limited basis until he is done with his masters...then we'll see. But it has a ton of good book stuff and info, and yah.

2.)On our new blog we are hosting a book challenge, which if you don't know what a book challenge is, it is just what it sounds like. I'll explain it better: It is usually a themed, there is a host blog and the owners of that blog determine the guidelines for selecting your books. So, Brad and I are doing just that. Check it out at: Orbis Terrarum (The whole world in Latin), it is on our B&b Ex Libris blog.

Tell us whatcha think!

Welcome!!

Welcome to the Pretty Paper Book Club:

When does the book club meet? What if I can’t come to a meeting?

We will meet the first Saturday of every month. I will post the time and place on the PP blog ahead of time each month, but the date will always be the same. We meet for dinner and then do the discussion at a coffee shop after dinner.

If you can’t come no worries, but try to let me know so I can get a head count for the restaurant, and because we are nosy.

What should I do to prepare for the meetings?

Read the book mainly. If while reading it something really stands out to you, write it down and bring it to mention at the group meeting.

What if I have not read the book, but would still like to come and hang out?

If you have not read the book, you are absolutely welcome to come and enjoy dinner with the group. At the book discussion time however, when the discussion is going on please either choose to sit at a different table and talk or sit in on the discussion and don’t chat with other members, thus causing people to be distracted.

How do we select books, can I choose a book?

We will vote on our books. Come with some selections if you have found some you are interested in reading with the group.

What are the book-selecting guidelines that I should keep in mind? Does it matter how long the book is or the subject matter it covers?

We read a book per month, so keep that in mind, when you look into the length of the book. Also, try to choose books that you will enjoy, and learn from. It is okay if they have hard-to-hear subject matter, but there should be a redemptive quality to the book. I know that many times you will not have read the book, but there are a lot of reviews on books and they help let you know the content of the books. I personally like Amazon and the reader’s reviews. Let me know if you have questions about book selection and I’ll help you through it.

What if I can’t be there for the meeting where my book is being discussed?

If we read through your book and something comes up and you are not able to attend the meeting at which we will discuss your selection, just give me some comments, questions, thoughts you had and I will deliver them to the group.

What are my responsibilities if I choose a book? What do I need to do online? What do I need to prepare for the meeting?

Help facilitate the meeting, by bringing some thought-out, open ended questions to lead the group with and, and making sure that everyone is included in the discussion time.

Who is welcome to join the group? Can I bring a friend?

We welcome new members. Any woman, of any age is welcome at anytime. This is a fun thing and every woman deserves a chance to have a break every once in a while.

Yes! Bring a friend. If the friend has not read the book, the same rules apply as for a member though, so keep that in mind if you bring ‘em.

Basic Book Club Etiquette on a book club website:

Follow basic book club etiquette during meetings.
a. Make sure you read the book before the meeting
b. Prepare your answers to Book Club questions before you arrive, providing interesting answers, thoughts and comments.
c. Allow everyone to have a chance to speak
d. Be a good listener
e. Avoid arguments (although healthy debates aren’t bad)
f. Be open to other thoughts and opinions different from your own.
g. If you don’t like the book, offer though-provoking criticism instead of simply complaining.
